Starting and ending with a match that resulted in a 3-1 defeat for Tottenham Hotspur, but 60 years apart, tales of football travels that incorporate visits to each of the current 92 professional grounds, and more besides.
The aim is to raise funds for charities who exist to help the families of ex-footballers suffering brain damage caused by the very game we all love. This starts with Jeff Astle, whose case brought the issue to the attention of the footballing world, and the foundation in his name, along with also other equally suitable charity organisations.
Interviews with players and managers involved in some of the games, and comments from others who made the headlines from the 1960s onwards, are added to highlights from 50 matches during six decades of following the game, with behind-the-scenes information, comments on the world of football as it changed during this time, and also where it has changed very little.
Dave takes readers beyond the 92, with highlights from Wembley, Scotland and Europe as he gives us a reminder of grounds we may have loved, but are now housing estates or shopping centres.
The book starts with coverage of several West Bromwich Albion games, plus other Midlands teams, but gradually broadens out to be of interest to followers of football generally.
92 Grounds for Divorce? Maybe, but Dave has more than got away with it.
About the Author
Dave Bassett spent all his working life in the financial world, but spent many hours playing and watching sport. His family have followed in the sporting tradition, with some talented cricketers and footballers amongst them.
He has contributed to a small number of written projects over the years, but this is his first solo effort. Now retired, he is playing more sport than ever, whilst enjoying his grandchildren’s sporting progress.
92 Grounds for Divorce? is very much a tongue-in-cheek title as he approaches 50 years of happy marriage.
