Mods: Two City Connection tells the story of the Mods but from the standpoint of young people who weren’t from the established ‘trend setting’ areas of London, Manchester or Liverpool – they were from the East Midlands cities of Leicester and Nottingham.

Based around the themes of social, financial and creative freedom the book utilises first hand eye witness accounts and images, capturing memories that have never been told before.

The book, by Leicester author Shaun Knapp, challenges perceptions associated with the Mods while exploring the themes of fashion, music, individuality, transport, drug use, gender and race, anti-social behaviour and legacy.

Knapp re-visits legendary hang-outs visited by the Leicester and Nottingham Mods including The Nite Owl, The Il Rondo, The Twisted Wheel and the Dungeon. It includes chapters written by the creatives and ‘faces’ from the two Mod scenes.

The book includes a fascinating foreword by Nottingham author, Alan Fletcher, author and story consultant, Quadrophenia.

About the Author

Shaun Knapp is Leicester born and bred and has spent many years in the city’s venues standing on sticky floors and cigarette ends watching aspiring and established Leicester bands rise, fall and sometimes hit the big time.

Shaun grew up with the Leicester music scene in his veins – his brother is John Knapp who played with two of the city’s most highly respected and much missed bands from the 60s and 70s: Legay and Gypsy.

With a double passion for contemporary local history and music and a background in city centre tourism and marketing, Shaun is the ideal person to tell the story of one of the most exciting eras in Leicester’s history.
